I've put all the barriers in place and have not Gambled apart from the odd lotto ticket for some time ,which is great 'Thank God'.

But Monday this week I went shopping for only a hour came back and my Dog had started to limp , I took him outside to try and walk it off but he was collapsing on his right rear leg , I booked a vet appointment on Tuesday this week

I had to leave him for a x-ray ,when I picked him up later in the day ,I was told he requires a operation for a crus-Ligament, costing £1430 which is not a problem ,because I have not gambled for a good while ,I have the money ,but the first thing i thought off, which I know is bad ,is to gamble and win the money.

Thank God I've not ,I love the dog ,'man's best friend' but why think off such a cruel think, in a time when someone close needs you .

i know I'm a compulsive gambler ,but the madness.

Has anyone any views?

Hey bags1961, these thoughts are your "go to" your "bolt hole" when things are tough. Your much loved dog is hurt and has to have an op and an expensive one at that.....your brain is saying.. I know what we can do to fix this !! The part of your mind that is your conscience is much bigger now you're not gambling is berating you for thinking such a thing.. Big picture...You haven't gambled you have the money to fix your mate..ignore the intrusive thoughts I think they go hand in hand with recovery. I get them in times of stress most of the time easy to shake off occasionally hard to shake off. When it's hard I'm very grateful I've read a lot on here, listened in GA and made my barriers strong. Actions not thoughts do the damage, stay strong

Hello Bags1961.

Im very sorry for your bad news and this is a known trigger point which you must fight with your stronger mind and talking to your moral support network.

Unfair and Hurtful events happen in life and they still happen when you are gamble free. Your life will be much better gamble free and you should be realising that.

However you know that gambling is not the answer and you know its not set up as an emergency top up fund. Its the addiction talking to you...gambling is a random event with the odds well against you. Its not the solution to paying your bills. You know what its done to you and it will do that to you again and again

Loving your dog is a wonderful thing.  It will be well worth the money for the happiness you can restore. There is a way through this for you.

If your pet was ill and you were still a gambling addict the problem would be far worse and you most probably wouldnt have any money to cope.

Best wishes from everyone on the forum
