Hi all, I'm new here.

Recently my boyfriend confessed that he has a gambling addiction which has been on and off for the past 10 years. I feel like I can't speak to family and friends about this as I don't want them to judge him.

Any advice on how I can support him.

Yes.

Take over his economy. Small sums till he can handle himself better (takes about a month to start feeling abit more normal)

Get him to Ga meetings or similar

See to it that your economies do not mix

Get him blocked on all sites and bookies

Get more people involved. This is nothing to be ashamed of it is an illness and the more that know the less chances of mishaps.

Best

C

I agree with everything that c43h said. The best thing is to cut off sources of cash that the gambler needs to gamble with. Have him turn finances over to you and he is on just a small allowance. If the temptation strikes and one has no money to gamble with, that is about the only way a problem gambler can overcome the temptation. Things like willpower, positive thinking.... etc. are pretty much useless in my opinion.

Thank you for the replies

Currently we don't live together but hoping to in the future so I don't think he would turn his finances over to me. He has a family member who has previously transferred money when required but was often left without money as she has a busy lifestyle.

He wants to stop and stated he has blocked all gambling websites from his phone, however he went to the bookies the day before his confession.

I feel like I can't trust him anymore, I've even considered ending the relationship as I have a feeling this will escalate but I doubt this would help the situation.

Do you mind me asking what is the extent of his gambling currently?

What is it impacting at the moment?
