Good evening,

I usually am one to just browse on this site and read others stories however now I feel like I could do with some support and advice.

I am 22 years old, I work a 9-5 job which I hate. I have been gambling on and off from 18 however the start of this year is when things went left. I’m a sucker for slots, they seem to reel me in even though I know I am going to lose in the long run. I went through a very rough patch during lockdown and found myself 1500/2000 in my overdraft. I took a loan of 1000 however that went straight back into the online casinos.

A few weeks back I opened up to my family and my girlfriend explaining what was going on, and they could not have been more supportive. At the time I was around £1200 in debt

I took the relevant steps, signed up to gamstop and tried to put the blocks in place for 5 years. This was accepted and I thought great I can start fresh.

Everything was fine for a month, gambling urges started to fade and life got better,

however as I sit and write this now I have just blown £500 of my wages on a non gamstop site which probably would have never paid me out anyway if I won! Yet I still Chuck money into these fraudsters accounts .

I am writing this today because I really need to change, I’m sure many others have said this before but today really is the changing Day 1.

Hi Craz,

your not alone! I feel exactly the same way with slot machines, £2/£3 a spin and before you know it, money is gone and you walk way thinking why? you walk into a supermarket and think about all of the things you could have had with the money lost but at that moment gambling, you don’t think about it and just continue.

You are still young (I’m 27) and can clear that debt through hard work and determination. I myself have about 18k of debt that has come about in about 18 months and thankfully have a way out through money that my family will give me.

I’ve looked online and found that the best form of recovery would be to set yourself goals. This could be as simple as a morning walk or saving £10 a week to build towards your future.

im happy to chat with you to help each over overcome this bad additiction we have as speaking about it is probably the best thing,

I myself have gone months without gambling but in one day could be straight back into the same situation,

There’s help out there and your not alone!

C

Hi CJ, Thanks for the response mate.

You are right, talking about it with others does seem to help. I already feel better this morning after a good night sleep and some deep thinking.

that’s the main thing for me, what I could have done with the money, holidays car upgrades etc. But we can’t dwell about the money that’s lost , that’s gone now and we just have to look forward.

What you mentioned about small steps is something I am putting into place now, every time I want to deposit into a casino I will put that money into my savings. Trying to do more exercise and clear my mind.

You are still young too, and have taken the first step by reaching out, so together we can beat this horrible addiction. I hope your doing well and look forward to keeping in touch to support each other.

Craz??

A couple of things

1) By all means open up to family but be careful not to just lump your problem onto them , be mindful they will likely not understand the addiction

the poster above seems to think that by their family paying off the gambling debt its a fast track to recovery ..... i hate to disappoint but it's a fast track to relapse

For someone to stop gambling they have to feel the damage it has caused this is usually financial but can be psychological and sometimes even physical

The gambling addict must face up to their demons and pay back the debt that has been wasted or they will never learn

2) you did 30 days without gambling why did you go back to it ? ask yourself

3) be careful playing overseas casinos they can and will just disappear with your money

Thanks for taking the time out to message.

it was a statement I made and didn’t suggest it’s a fast track to recovery hence why I am on this forum speaking about my situation. It’s something I will still have to pay back so still understand the seriousness of the debt I am in.

I am seeking advise to help me overcome my situation and hope there will not be a relapse in future.

Hi CJ

Glad to have you here, it's a step toward a better future!

I am very similar to yourself with slots, I got into very deep trouble after 8ish years gambling, with it spiraling out of control around 2 or so years ago. I can relate.

The best advice I could give, would be to use GamStop, GamBan and contact your bank to stop any gambling related transaction. These are all good tools to help you on your way - they have helped me and I am 45 day gamble free today! The daily chat room on here is also awesome, very encouraging and it's great to talk to like-minded souls.

I wish you the very best in your recovery - there is always someone around to listen.

You can do this.

Hi Rudge,

Thanks for the message.

I have installed Gamban and this should at least act as a deterrent when having the urge to gamble.

well done to you on reaching 45 days, must feel good to know you’ve empowered yourself to do better and hope I can follow in your footsteps.

keep in contact as it will be good to hear how things are going and for sure, speaking about it to others who understand is really helping.

Thanks

C

Hi Craz!

Well done on 4 days GF! I'm on my first day today and it's been so tough, but reading all these stories has just shown me exactly why I need to do this! I'm 24 now but was in the exact same position as you 2 years ago but continued to gamble. That debt I was in has now quadrupled! You're doing the right thing buddy stick at it!

Matt

Afternoon Matt, Thanks for replying mate.

Your exactly right in terms of needing to stop it now, I’m reading stories of people 30/40+ who have lost a serious amount, I need to get myself sorted now before it spirals out of control.

In regards to your debt, just like myself chipping away at it and being positive is the way forward. I am fortunate enough to have not completely f****d myself but was leading that way if I didn’t change.

We’re all in this together and the support from this forum is brilliant,

one step at a time.
