Hey, I’m just wondering if any of you have taken control of someone’s bank account if they are an addict?? My boyfriend thinks this would be a good idea and I want to know if any of you have any advice on how to make this work effectively. I hope what I said makes sense. Thank you.

Hi

Yes get proactive. Protecting his money is essential but that means all of it and he lives on an allowance.

He can have a small account that you transfer money into. He will operate on a sandwich/petrol allowance on which he provides receipts. You can use rapid transfer facilities which come in same day. Its probably best if cash is avoided but there are situations where he will need cash for a haircut etc

You keep accounts separate and get some advice from the bank about complying with regulations.  He can have a debit card because his account wont have a big balance in it and you make sure no overdraft facilities or loans are offered by the bank

If he wants shirts or a treat,  he clears it with you and you oversee the transaction with evidence and receipts.

You will monitor his credit report and make sure you have a sixth sense if he is likely to use pawn shops or payday lenders. If you think he can get money from mates you have to shut down that possibility also.

Its not about treating him like a baby. Its about saving his life and any quality of life you both have.

It can be done and this advice works if he is starting a proper recovery journey.

Best wishes from everyone on the forum
