family stress and problems have been a heavy thing the last couple of week i have notices when i'm stressed about something that is going on or when i'm trying to help someone in my family out i am taking their stress on is when that voice is my head would get lounder telling me to gamble just to try and escape from the thing that going on but i now know that stress is a trigger for me so i take myself out of what is going on i can't keep being a sponge for people around me when i'm taking to take care of myself and deal with my problems not everyone else i know that sounds selfish but how can anyone help someone else before they help themself first and foremost

Yes, I understand exactly what you describe. Breaking the cycle of addiction and becoming gf can initially be a very selfish thing. You only have room in your head for your own recovery, and to deal with other peoples issues is almost impossible.

But then, and only when you feel ready, you can share your experiences with others in a similar position. As addicts we need peer support, so dont beat yourself up at the moment. Your time to help will come.

Good evening Kay

I am really sorry to hear you feel really stressed. Coming to the decision of investing as much in your own self and tackling your gambling harm is most certainly not selfish.

The family and loved ones around you will in turn benefit from a less stressed you if you look after yourself first. Guilt when we put ourselves first is really common and a feeling that most can relate to, I certainly can.

Speaking to someone  on a 1-1 basis may help and at Gamcare there is live chat and helpline 24/7 or even the welcoming chatrooms that will see many people that can understand how you feel.  So you never need to feel alone with your worries connected to gambling harm.

Well done though for reaching out to our forum Kay.
