I'm not sure where to start really. I'm not a typical gambler, I don't spend money I can't afford to lose, I'm not in debt due to gambling, family and friends know I gamble. I don't really keep it a secret. I suppose what annoys me is the money I do spend, which could be used elsewhere and for better things. I tend to gamble when I'm bored mostly.

Anyhow I've just done my first 24 hours of not gambling. I don't want to gamble anymore, if I'm honest I find it incredibly boring. I think after my last bout of gambling last night its lost it's magic.

I've looked through some of the info on here and read a few other stories. I've made my keep busy list, though its going to be tough because I am incredibly lazy.

I will be checking in every day on my thread to mark my progress.

Thanks for your comments. I don't think its deeper than I think it is, I've gambled for many, many years but I've also had many times where I've not gambled. I think it is mainly due to boredom and its just something to do. I have read lots of the posts on here and my reasons for coming on here is that I don't want my gambling to start getting out of hand. I've never gambled with money that's for bills or got myself into debt through gambling, and after reading a few posts on here about folks losing thousands of pounds or their wages on pay day, just set something off in my head.

Anyhow day two, no gambling, yay me... Monday and Tuesday will be the big ones as they are my days off but I have plans. Wishing everyone strength and courage to fight these demons and keep the pennies in our pockets.

Bunny

Hi Bunny

I am a recovering CG.

"I've looked through some of the info on here and read a few other stories. I've made my keep busy list, though its going to be tough because I am incredibly lazy. "

The real trick is to keep the mind actively engaged in something else. Anything that occupies your mind will suffice. It could be something as mundane as reading a book as you sit in a park, listening to all the birds, crosswords, puzzles and excercise are also good alternatives. If you find something you enjoy doing, it generally takes your attention away from any thoughts of gambling.

You have read about the damage that excessive gambling can cause. I'm glad that you have. I hope it will give you another reason to put a halt to your gambling in the future.

Best wishes

So thing's didnt quite work out like I'd hoped. Unfortunately my daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma back in July and I've been gambling quite alot recently, I suppose I'm using it as something to take my mind off what is happening. I dont go out much, I'm either in 1 of 3 place, bed, hospital or work. Its quite stressful at the moment so gambling online is my escape. Its a shame I could'nt come back with better news.

Welcome back to the forum Bunny.

It is good that you're talking about your gambling.

You've recognised that you are feeling stressed following your daughter's diagnosis and you are trying to find some moments of escape by gambling online. Are you talking with the hosptial staff or your GP about how you're feeling and what emotional support might be available to you as a family member or carer? Charities like Macmillan Cancer Support, CLIC Sargent, or The Lymphoma Association may be able to give you more information on specialist support near you.

Many of our forum users who are stopping online gambling have chosen to put some barriers in place to interrupt their gambling habit, for example self-excluding from all of their gambling accounts and installing parental controls or blocking filters like GamBlock or Betfilter. If you'd like to discuss this or other methods of recovery and self-care, you're welcome to call us on 0808 8020 133. The advisers on our freephone can also help you to access free counselling appointments locally if you'd like to have the support of a therapist to help you overcome your gambling problem.

Take care,

Adam.

Thanks for that, sorry I havent been back been quite busy.

We get quite a lot of support from Clic Sargent and Macmillan, I havent really mentioned my gambling to anyone. To be honest it's not really an important thing at the moment, me supporting my daughter through chemo is and I dont want to take anything from her, at this moment.

Two bit of good news, the first is that she has got the all clear, I'm not sure if we are allowed to say remission yet as she is still having treatment, and the second is that I havent gambled since the last time I posted on here. I have blocked every and any betting account I could find or remember. I even went into town on my own yesterday and I didnt go in the arcade, which is a first in a long time. I'm just taking life and everything one day at a time. I still get the odd craving but I look and I think and I change my mind as it's not worth it.
