Hi all,

my names Mark and im 36.

I have been gambing all my life i guess, and you know its not good when you gamble on things you have no clue on!

I feel lucky i am not in a position like some on here but i feel unless i stop i could well get there.

I have a long term partner and we wish to have children soon and go on nice holidays, i have recently got a well paid job after years so now also want to save.

Just do not know how to get the rush i feel when betting? any advice would be apreciated, i had won a nice amount on boxing day but i just feel like now i want to stop, i get grumpy when i bet and take it out on the ones closest.

Have a good day all. DAY ONE ON OF GAMBLING!!!!!

Hi MrBoobie!

Not sure the rush from gambling is easily replaced by anything else. For me it was a shut off from the real world, I competely zoned out when waiting for my bet to come in or the next roulette spin.

It was quite a vicious circle because I would gamble which then caused financial problems and guilt/remourse and the only way I thought I could get rid of those awful feelings was to go back into my bubble and gamble.

I beleive that the biggest physical 'buzz' we get is actually from losing too according to some boffins somewhere. It's a weird and deadly addiction.

If like me you've been gambling non-stop for most of your adult life then it is daunting to imagine life without it, i'm only a month in but already starting to feel less anxious, happier and starting to enjoy some of the simple things in life. When you're gambling you can often only think about your next bet.

Take things one day at a time and you'll quickly notice there are far more better things to do with your time than spending all day betting.

You can also get a buzz out of not gambling, the good feeling you get from being in control of your life. Once your brain becomes used to not getting the feelings you got from gambling, things will settle down. It is pretty daunting at first but after a while you realise you can live without it. Gambling is such a empty activity anyway, even when I won I got little pleasure and spending all day on your own betting is no way to live.

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the forum, and well done for your post.

I’m glad to learn that you have decided to quit gambling before it gets total hold of you. I think you’ve made a good decision on that, as gambling problem gets worse if you don’t do anything about it, and it can easily get out of control.

It’s like a vicious cycle; the more you gamble, the more you lose, and the more you chase your losses.

Gambling problem deprives you from enjoying the fruits of your hard work; at worse, you’ll have nothing to show for it and you can end up in deeper debts.

At 36 years of age, you hopefully have many years ahead of you where you can recover from your gambling problem, and look forward to a gamble free future.

Keep reading the posts from our forum, and learn about more strategies and boundaries to help you to manage your urges effectively, and eventually overcome your gambling problem – stop completely.

Also, congratulations on getting a well paid job that you’ve been looking for, and I do agree with you that it’s time to save for the bright future that you’ve been dreaming of. You can do it, and I’ll encourage you to go for it by sticking to the advice that we offer you.

Maybe you’ll like to contact us via our free phone Helpline on: 0808 8020 133 and speak to one of our advisers for further help; like counselling for instance.

We’re open everyday from 8.00am to midnight.

Thanks again for your post, and pls. keep posting.

Kind regards,

Beatrice
