Hi everyone.Â
New here. I've been gambling since I was old enough, never been in control of my gambling really, but always thought I could stop myself. Well I couldn't. I hidden it for years from my family and partner of 15 years. Everyime I relapsed my gambling got worse, and since October I was quite depressed and thought it doesn't matter about what I lose, I can always end it. Well it all came to a head late December, I had reached rock bottom, out of money, 50k in debt, multiple loans and credit cards, i decided to end my life, fortunately I wasn't successful. I have since opened up to everyone about my addiction, everyone has been so supportive, I feel so fortunate to have a supportive network. Still getting to grips with everything , but working through is all. The hardest part has been opening up. Hopefully it all gets better from here on.Â
hi ruffins......... no amount of money lost is worth ending ur life......money is a man made thing...... its just a figure..... it allows us to buy food and shelter...... but anymore than that is just gravy....... Well done for seeking help,,,,,,, u will feel low for the first month and there will be times when u seek that dopamine..... but trust me if u get thru this first month the possibilities are endless..... trust me ur self esteem and confidence will grolw with time away from gambling

Hi Ruffins,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing.
Well done for opening up to people close to you, and it is good to hear you say that you feel fortunate about receiving their support.
As you mentioned that you experienced depressed feelings and suicidal feelings last year, I thought I should share some resources in case you ever have those feelings again (You don't mention where you are based, if you aren't based in England, your nation may well have similar local resources):
NHS website page listing various resources to get help for suicidal thoughts, if ever needed:
https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/help-for-suicidal-thoughts/
NHS 111 if you ever need to access mental health support:
https://www.england.nhs.uk/2024/08/nhs-111-offering-crisis-mental-health-support-for-the-first-time/
If you are based in Britain and would like to talk about support options for your recovery, please do consider calling us on our freephone 0808 8020 133, or come through on our Live Chat or WhatsApp.
Take care,
Adam.
Hi Ruffins
It was great to meet and talk in the two chatrooms today and I am sure by now you know that we are all here to support each other. No judgement and we all have similarities in our life story. Adam is so right, don't ever think your life is worthless which is just moving the pain onto other people. I get the impression that it's probably the debt which is the biggest worry. It goes without saying that the only way to sort yourself out is to put in the hard work and get through this. I'm going to ask the obvious question, have you spoken to StepChange debt charity. They have helped me and others on here so much. It doesn't take long to speak to them. Just have a list of your debts, outgoings and income and give them a ring. It's worth saying you are a gambler in recovery and your mental health has been affected. All the banks and credit card companies now have specialist teams that can talk to you and Stepchange. The government put new fines in place for anyone that causes stress to customers who are experiencing any form of mental health problems. I'm sure like me you are seeing that there is a lot of help out there. The chatrooms are always good for advice and are inspiring when people like Adam who is 7 years GF are there. I consider the long timers on the 8pm chatrooms to be friends. I've never met them but I literally owe them my life
Good luck for the week ahead (I know that's a bad saying but it isn't said with any gambling insinuation)
