Hi Patrick, i had the same problem, It is difficult. But i got so fed up with it, i totally started avoiding sports channels/events on t.v - including news about sport. It took a few weeks of this. Then slowly i could watch an event for a short time and built up. After a while a few months i just got used to watching an event as enjoyment as i had withheld myself from them for so long. Simple message just go all out - avoid the events - Its not entertainment if your not feeling happy at end. I hope this makes sense and helps somewhat. Good luck.

@patrick11 Sometimes the simplest answers are the best. Try not watching sport for a while.

Now I know that when I say this people say "but I love sport, I need it in my life, blah blah blah".

Obviously I would recommend also getting help and GA meetings are my choice but if you try to do it on will power alone it becomes really difficult, the addiction is too strong.

Sport will always be there, just like gambling will, so why not try for three months not watching anything to see if that helps? Or, give over your money, close your accounts and put blocks in place to make betting more difficult for you.

What have you done to help yourself?

Chris.

i would tend to agree with the above , just stop watching it for a while

i used to watch 30-40 hours of sport a week ,when i stopped i realised just how much time i was spending on it and half the time not even enjoying it shouting at the TV

i love football but it can be monotonous at times a high percentage of games are dire and boring

give it up for a bit see how you feel

Hi Patrick11 and Welcome.

Yes firstly take some time thinking about this as an addiction and focus on what it has really done to you...the financial losses...... the stress..... the loss of your self respect and dignity.

Then you can see if you are ready for your born again moment and willing to talk to people close to you about it.

There is no shame in reaching out. The addiction is more complex than you now think. Its based on a drug addiction.

Abstention and a recovery journey is empowering. If you are ready to follow the trusted advice you can make it history but you can never be complacent again.

The answers are within you. Facing the truth will set you free.

Best wishes from everyone on the forum
