Hi,

I'm John, 28 years old and have been gambelling since the age of 18.

My main daemon in life is online sports betting. I have other issues from bandits to even games online. Whatever their is to gamble on I have done and still do at times.

I'm one of the usual gamblers on here, get paid... GREAT! Gambling tokens!! ... and then in a few hours its all gone. I have lived my life this way for the past 10 years.

I have been trying my very best to stop but it's just not working for me.

Gambling gives me escapism , it gives me a great buzz and it keeps me going throughout the day.

Im writing this basically to get some advice regarding the boredom side. Recently I've been handed a few thousand pound since me and my partner broke up. £3,000.
When we broke up I was worried about money , how was I going to pay for the house and bills and pets? How was I going to live my life and do the enjoyable things in life. I was worried.
Once I received the money I did what I always was going to do and that was to gamble.
I got the amount up to £8000.

NOW.. this is what my issue is. I wasn't happy at ВЈ4000, 5 , 6 , ВЈ7000 , I had to keep going and going and I'm stood here now with the £8000 withdrawn but without gambling I'm bored.

With that money I could buy a new tv, new Xbox, trips away, nights out, new furniture... so so so many things but not of that excites me.
If I went online now and ordered an all singing all dancing television I just wouldn't be excited as I would winning money gambling.
Anything done and bought or even given to me at the minute just does not make me happy or excite me one single bit.

For e.g yesterday I ordered a new mobile phone as mine is falling apart. Am I excited? Not really!

Now, I'd say I'm not a stupid person , I have a good job which takes alot of thinking. But I just really don't understand how my head is working right now.

If I came up and gave my brother or my parents a new phone they'd be jumping for joy and over the moon! They'd think it was their lucky year. For me. Id much prefer putting a football or sports bet in and watch it come in!

Has anyone got any advice about this kind of behaviour? I enjoy sports, walking my dog , going out but just nothing is enjoyable anymore.

Maybe I need to see my GP , I just don't know where to turn.

As for my gambling , I want to stop but it's extremely hard. I've been for therapy and I've read forums and I've read people's issues and nothing has stopped me.
My girlfriend leaving and seeing parents upset hasn't.

The therapist mentioned gamblock, blocking apps etc etc. I bypassed them so easy on my phone (I won't say how) but I did.

Thanks for reading my story.

Hi John,/

I just read your story, are you debt free? And you have been given £8,000? If that is true, then try your very hardest to stop now! Otherwise you will gamble it away, sorry to be blunt but it will happen, £8,000 becomes 7...becomes 6...becomes 5...becomes 0.00 and then will be broke.

I received £7,000 in a will and gambled it all, I am a complusive gambler and I have been 131 days gamble free and you can do this too! About your boredom, try and get some new hobbies, see more friends. Try your very hardest stop, put your £8000 in a fixed rate isa so your are unable to touch it for a period of time. 1 years, 2 years whatever.

I wish you all the best.

Alex

Gamstop is the answer, if you do genuinely want to give stopping a go. It seems like you're using gambling as a crutch, and self excluding for 5 years might seem a step too far right now. That's fine. Sign up to Gamstop for 6 months and see how it goes. Give your mind time to clear, before you give all that 8k back. You might start to find enjoyment in spending on the little things again once the gambling fog clears. It did for me after 1-2 months.

Hi John,

I agree with Brucey-B, Gamstop is the answer! I wish I had done it before getting myself into 45,000 worth of debt & that is how serious it can get if you don't stop. I'm 24 with a fairly good job but that debt is going to be with me for a very long long time.

I use to gamble becuase of the buzz, but since I have stopped (Over 6 months now apart from 1 relapse which lost me 200) I never get the urge to gamble, I feel much better in myself and I just spend time with family, friends or I go and play fooball or Golf.

You can do it, and just take it day by day, week by week, month by month.

I now feel lot better depositing into my savings account instead of betting account

Thanks for your replies, they do give me hope and it's nice to hear and speak to people with the same issues and I can relate to. And one thing I appreciate is your time to reply and the effort to do so.

Regarding Gamcare, I did download it around 6 months ago. I paid for it and I thought this will be the one thing that will save me , it did at the start, however I'm very technical and easily found a route around it. I won't tell you how it others as that would ruin alot of lives but it's very easy to do so. I've tried this and other gambling software.
This is why I am saying, where do I go from here?

.... just an update regarding my situation. The inevitable happened. I had around ВЈ8500, I lost ВЈ4,000 at the start of last week and lost around ВЈ2000 last night so I'm now on £2600.

In my mind I knew this would happen and my lucky streak would go. As I've said, I'm never happy with what ive won and nothing is never enough. I always said to my mum, even if I won £1 million in the lottery I would still want to enjoy betting. It's a massive part of my life. I know it is as last night I spent till 2 o'clock in the morning betting to then come now to work at 7 absolutely shattered and in my mind I would easy bet right now. I would love to do it!

Blocks don't work, therapy doesn't work, reading these put me at ease and help my anxiety but it doesn't stop me.

I don't know where to go and having this last £2600 scares me to death!

Dear Asfc2019,

You're saying you tried paying for and downloading 'Gamcare' - you probably don't mean us, as we don't offer software - and the other posters are suggesting GAMSTOP which is not blocking software - it's a self-exclusion scheme for online gambling. You just sign up at www.gamstop.co.uk and they'll self-exclude you from all participating sites.

I can understand you being scared of losing the last of your money. Is there any way you can lock it away where you can't access it? give it to someone for safekeeping? put it in a bank account that has a notice period?

If you'd like to talk over your options, you'd be very welcome to contact us on the HelpLine or NetLine- details at the top of the page.

Best wishes

Forum Admin.

Yes sorry Gamstop. It took me a week or so to bypass it and get around it. It was pretty easy thinking about it, I paid for 1 year so happy and excited to finally stop this mess I cause myself. I needed it. But it was so easy to get round it , but like I said I won't discuss this on here as it would ruin it for alot of people.

Yes , I am going to have to give someone else my money and I have also applied for a Monzo account. I'm sure this will help more.

It's hard when the only way out I see is to not have any money at all.

I've always said to my family , I'm always happiest when I don't have any money and I'm struggling as then I have no gambling tokens at all!

Sorry gamban I paid for and gamblock you dont. I've tried them both and another that I can't remember and with all of them it's really easy to bypass them on your phone and on the computer.

I was really desperate to do so.

I was in a mess this morning buy weighing up my options I think Monzo is a great option! Id recommend people look at this option. You can do a bank switch and close your other account down. And with Monzo you can add a gambling block on your account which stops any money going to any gambling sites. I wish I had found this year's ago!!

I’d also suggest ‘GAMSTOP’ mate. Absolutely no way of bypassing their system.

Monzo is great, I use it and it's been brilliant. Much more convenient than a conventional bank too!

GAMSTOP is a completely different kind of thing to Gamban/Gamblock etc despite the very similar name. GAMSTOP isn't something you install. It's a website form you fill in to get listed on a national exclusion database. Do have a look, I'm quite sure you're thinking about something very different! www.gamstop.co.uk
