Day 1.

I won't gamble today.

I just completed an excel spreadsheet for my future finances to get me out of the hole I have gotten myself into and it says I should be debt free inclusive of mortgage in 9 years. I am due to change jobs next year therefor I'm really focused and will not have the excess cash I have squandered into oblivion. It will be a substansive decrease in salary which will gradually over a few years increase to my level now.

The recovery starts here.

I dread the coming months as I know it's going to be tough. I know that there is only me who can stop this.

All cards have been cut up. I've self excluded from literally every site known to man. It's taken over 10 hours of registering and emails. There are some really difficult sites out there. Sending forms off to be self excluded from an online company? Talk about making life difficult. TalkTalk have a nice little feature that blocks most gambling sites. I've installed a chrome plugin that stops access to gambling. I've even started muting the TV when the football goes to adverts.

I'll be updating my diary as much as possible.

Thanks for reading.

Hi DJBlu

Those are some good blocks you've put in place. If you'd like even more support, for example, confidential counselling, or just to chat things over with an Adviser, just give us a call on 0808 8020 133 or chat to us on the Netline - link is at the top of the page!

Best wishes

Almost a week and no gambling.

I have put blocks in place but not even the best software/firewall can prevent the most determined gambler.

The wife has all the cards. Talktalk have blocked online gaming access. My router blocks gambling sites. My browser does "WebFilterPro" for Chrome. I've enabled the 18+ filter with EE.

All this and I still have managed it.

This got me thinking and I have had so many ideas.

I thought of setting up an online bank/prepay card company which will stop payments to any gambling site by blocking the merchant code and payments to online wallets. It would also monitor cash withdrawals so you can't withdraw more than say £50 in 2-3 hours or to what ever is set by the individual. There would be no limit on normal retail outlets.

I've even thought about creating an online service where an individial signs up and the site will self exclude the individual from all online gambling sites that are involved with the project.I have self excluded from all but a few and it took me over 4-5 hours of registering and self excluding, it takes so much time and will power. Surely there has to be an easier way.

There are so many out there that surely there is a demand for thi type of service. Am I alone on this thought?

Waking up each morning with a fresh outlook on life.

I will get rid of the mountain of debt. I will make life better.

6 days. Going to make this 10 days. and then set another target.

That's 1 week done,

Now on to 2. I haven't had any opportunities to gamble this week however I haven't had any urges too.

Anyone else scared that they will never be able to stop themselves? Every time it's the same. I fear I am never going to beat this problem, wierd as I am the one who can.

Anyways.

Here's to week 2.

😀

Hi DJBlu, well done on your first week gf. I've also just completed my first week, but also scared as hell, as I did I a little urge last night for a split second, but thankfully I was strong enough to overcome it and woke up feeling good and positive this morning, but I'm well aware I could of woke up feeling the complete opposite. This site is really helping me. I log on first thing in the morning and last thing before sleep and read people stories etc. I'm just setting myself little goals at the moment, like you 10 days, then 20 days etc. Well done so far, stay strong! C x

Hi Charley,

It's a rollercoaster of emotion. The fear of urges, the sick to the stomach when the urge comes, then the happiness when they fade. Which thankfully they do.

Here's to week 2 and long may they continue! 😀

DJBlu, well done on your gf days so far. You're absolutely right...I have never had so many mixtures of emotions up one minute, down the next. But we need to fight so we don't have that sick to the stomach feeling, fear of looking at our bank balance, shame, embarrassment and all the rest. I'm done feeling those feelings, as life is far too short to do this damage to ourselves! Stay strong! C x

Another week without gambling.

It feels good. Have had access to cash this week and not had any urges. This has been a real boost to my confidence. I have placed pictures of loved ones around the computer I use. I have also put a picture of a child in a pram outside a bookmakers on my desktop as it's a real eye opener. Congrats to you Charley too. Keep it up.

Here's to week 3!

Late reply this week.

In the process of changing jobs which will take 3 months to complete. Keeping me busy in a way. Still GF.

5 weeks down and well into week 6.

Not thought much about it as I've been too busy sorting finances and the like to make the transition to the new job.

Thanks for the support. Apprieciate it.

Another late reply,

Where are the days going?

10 more days GF.

Really feeling positive. Not had an urge in a while so maybe that's made it easier. All the blocks are in place and hopefully should an urge arise I'll be prepared.

Keep it up guys, stay strong.

Here's to week 7 & 8. 😀

Thanks Stephen,

Another week down, another to go.

Had £20 in my pocket this week as a tester.

Didn't have any urges. Really have got a hatred towards it. I am looking into week 9 and still going strong.

Here's to week 9.
