Hi,  does anyone have any ideas/tips to help stop the urge to gamble?

I don’t want to gamble but keep getting the urge at the times I used to gamble - mainly with my morning coffee and then late in the evenings.

thank you!

Hi Pugs

The dreaded urges....I can't remember how far in you are but it takes between 4 to 6 weeks to retrain and repair your brain to not require the amount of dopamine from gambling. The overload of dopamine through gambling bypasses the receptors in the brain that control the amount that is too much. The good news is that our amazing brains do repair themselves quickly.

Urges are created from a variety of symptoms. It can be through habit, deja vu, routine at certain times, boredom and many others. It's not a great deal of difference to the reason why any of us gambled in the first place.

I don't think there is an easy fix but I've worked hard to retrain my brain. If I'm down or in a spot or have an urge (usually when I'm thinking about a shortcut instead of tackling something in life), then my go to is to go for a walk. The science says that urges last up to half an hour. Doesn't mean another one won't come along but I just think, this feeling won't last so I'm off for a walk. I think anything that makes you happy and takes half an hour or more, in time will stop the urges. We don't need the dopamine levels we created through gambling and it's available in natural format everywhere. Another fail safe is to ring someone because you forget about the urge concentrating on talking.

Urges get less and less over time and we can't forget that giving up gambling is no different than any other addiction.
