Friction
I wanted to write something today about friction between myself and the first bet. I think this is such an important part of recovery and is part of my safety net. I also have a reminder to check on my phone each week that it's as robust as can be so that complacency doesn't creep in or the addiction voice catches me on a low day. I can't forget that relapses can happen in early or long term recovery.
So I have all the blocks in place but within reason I like to build friction, the maximum amount of time to allow me to change my mind. For me this needs to be half an hour as thoughts of gambling subside within that so it gives me the best opportunity not to gamble.Â
So my friction or resistance barrier (as per film title.and it's a great film) look like this
My bank has gambling transactions blocked
My ATM withdrawal limit is down to the minimum
My partner checks my banking app and I only have one account which is an online provider who charges for withdrawals and doesn't have branches
Some people might keep the petrol in their car low so they can't get out of selfexcluson area without filling up
I've got a few inspirational quotes dotted around the house and one in my wallet by my card.Â
I'm going to put ODAAT as my screen saver.Â
In my car I have a post it note which says Don't do it
Being present I actually noticed the picture of my kids on my laptop and phone screen which reminds me what I'm doing in recovery
On my car key ring I have my GA key ring but a gone not in GA could have a different one on there.Â
Just one of these might save life one day. What does friction mean to you ?
Affected by gambling?
