Hi,

I'm 30, I had been gambling since 16 years old , I've been to therapy, rehab and GA. I stopped gambling consistently around 25, I relapsed when I broke up with my EX for a period of couple weeks, that was around 2 years ago and have been gamble free ever since.

I started dating someone new in August, she saw on my phone I had the 'I am Sober App' and asked me what that was in relation to. I told her about my gambling and everything that had happened. She was very understanding but had some valid reservations about what that meant for building a future together.

Luckily, I don't have much debt and the debt I do have I will have paid off by around the middle of 2026, I avoided an negative credit report filings and my credit score is around 800. I have a good job in the finance industry and have worked really hard to to rebuild my life.

How do I help her through this period of uncertainty ? How do I give her the comfort and security she deserves ? She really feels like the one and before she found out about the gambling we talked of Kids and marriage. I really hope I can help navigate her through this - any advice is very welcome.

Dear BeeUnited74,

Thank you for sharing your question.

Well done for your continued abstinence from gambling. It sounds like you have built a good foundation of communication with your disclosure, and they have reacted supportively so far. Continuing with open and honest dialogue should continue to be beneficial to you both. If you wish you can let them know that GamCare if here if they ever want to discuss anything gambling-recovery related. We also have self-paced learning about gambling harms and recovery on our website. As you described this will probably be a gradual navigation rather than a one-off conversation.

Wishing you the both the best for the future,

Louise
