first day went well but then I was skint and at work so I could not bet then today come knowing some money was clearing in my bank and in a really good mood suddenly my attitude had changed thinking oh well.I stop next time let's have a bet.could believe that I was going to crumble after 3 days. So I Tryed to keep myself busy and kept saying just leave it
went for walk left phone at home and now the day as gone I did it did not have a bet I know it's probably going to get harder before it gets better and lot of mess to sort out but I'm just taking it one day at a time

Morning nobby and welcome to the forum , firstly well done on admiting you have a problem and secondly for actually doing something about it .

The first days / weeks even months are never easy and at first your full of positivity because youv'e decided to stop but those feelings are soon overriden as soon as you once again have a little money , the brain stars thinking " Maybe I could win a bit back " and " This could be my day " ? , it's just gambling trying to make you justify having a bet , almost giving yourself a green light to gamble again .

You have to take One day at a time and deal with these feelings as they turn up , just like you did by going for a walk in order to take your mind of it .

The best advice I can give is to let go of your losses and accept that gamblings beat you , its nothing to be ashamed of as gambling has beat us all into submission on here , put some blocks in place by either self excluding from sites or bookies and limit your ability to fund your gambling by handing over financial control to someone you trust , stopping gamblings easy but its the staying stopped thats the hard bit . You really can do this you just have to want to stop more than you want to place another bet .

I'm just off to work now but I'll catch up with you soon and I'm sure you'll have more responses during the day so any questions just ask .

I wish you well my friend

Regards Alan

Hi nobbys69,

Thanks for your post, and well done for sharing your story here.

Regarding overcoming one’s gambling problem, one has to start somewhere thus, abstaining for 3 days is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, you’ll continue to progress on it by following our advice on strategies, and also learn from experiences of fellow forum members too.

Just be patient with yourself, and take it step by step. If you’ve abstained for three good days, then hopefully you can double it up, and move on to weeks and months until you achieve your aim.

Try and do more of the strategies that work for you, and look out for more similar ones too, and apply them to distract yourself from the urge to gamble; just like you did when you left your phone at home and went out for a walk.

Eventually, the urge passed, and you became your normal self again, isn't it? That also shows you that, you’ll still survive if you don’t act upon your urges.

In case you find yourself struggling at a point, don’t hesitate to contact us on the Helpline on: 0808 8020 133 or, on the Netline and speak to an adviser for further help and support.

Our services are open every day from 8.00am to midnight.

Keep up the good work, and keep posting.

Kind regards,

Beatrice
