Hi
I have been on the stepchange website to get some advice on dealing with my debts. The recommendation for me is either 1. sell my house to pay off my debts (I could pay off my mortgage and my debts and then have a sum of about £60k left over) or 2. set up a Debt Management Plan.
I am very reluctant to sell my house. If it was just me, maybe I would, but it would be a big upheaval for my daughter (age 12) and we would have to find somewhere to rent as I wouldn't be able to afford a huge mortgage to buy another house (could also be tricky renting if my credit is bad?) so I'm thinking the DMP is the best option. But the site says it could take up to 6 years to clear my debt (of approx £40k). This seems such a long time 🙁
Has anyone on here taken out a DMP and how is it working out for you??

Six years is a long time but then it's a lot of money. I think you might just have to bite the bullet and commit to it. Have you ever used the Moneysaving expert website? There are lots of people who have debt problems on there. I think on a DMP they make sure you have enough to live on and lead a normal life. The problem with selling your house would be finding somewhere else to live, and maybe it's too easy? Plus you will have "spare" cash which could be dangerous...I think the long and hard route is maybe the best. Your daughter will be 18 and about to leave the nest then and you will have a whole new life to look forward to.
Thanks Bodgerthebadger, yes I think I need to bite the bullet and sign up for the DMP. 6 years is a long time, but any extra money I get I can pay over to hopefully make it a bit shorter. As you say, my daughter will be 18 then. Gosh, that sounds so scary and far away!! I can't believe I've got into this mess 🙁
Just changed from a paid DMP to step change. 5 years for me BUT a light is at the end of the tunnel. Would not consider selling the house.
Stay positive and good luck
Same advice from me...Don't sell the house! Sorry, I have no experience either but you will get through this - ODAAT
I have successfully completed a Debt Management Plan.
Me and my wife got into debts totalling £22k (I'm guessing half was entirely due to my gambling) change of house holidays 2 kids and low wages accounted for the rest.
I finished mines around 2 years ago, took around 4 years to pay off.
I'd recommend you check out a company called Payplan, not profit making and are often recommended by credit companies.
They deal with everything on your behalf, and threatening letters phone calls from creditors stopped pretty much overnight as soon as they realise your entering into a DMP with them.
Thanks so much for the comments x
All the best, whichever route you chose xx
Thanks Pete, I'm still thinking of the DMP rather than the selling the house. Wish I didn't have to do either option, of course!

I started a DMP in 2006 and took me 7 years to pay my debts. It sounds a long time but like most things in life it flies over and once you start you feel better because you are at least trying to resolve your problems.
Affected by gambling?
