Hi all

I'm 10 years late in joining the forum and coming to realise that I need to kick gambling for good.
I first gambled about 10 years ago and it quickly escalated to problem gambling in a very short time. I used to put a football coupon on every Saturday. Back in those days it was easier to predict winners (at least that's how I remember it). I think nowadays there is always an upset somewhere.
It was at that time my friend introduced me to fobt roulette and it is this that is my downfall. I remember the first time I played. I won £103.50 on one spin.
Now I steal to gamble. I lie about why I took my mothers credit card. Tomorrow I am going to say that I needed the money to pay my overdraft for which the term was up. I am about 10k in debt and it's all due to gambling. I get such a buzz from playing. It has taken over my life. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my life. I'm scared because every other time I have tried to stop I always go back.
People my age (I'm 28) have grown up and have families and have bought property. Gambling has prevented me from doing this and now I work to service my debts.
I feel great shame from my predicament. I suffer crippling anxiety and have had bouts of depression both of which are very debilitating and stem from gambling. Panic attacks being the worst part.
Can gambling be stopped? How did you do it? I need all the help I can get.
I know this is my fault. I also feel that the government do little to combat this problem. Why are these immoral machines allowed and why do bookmakers get permission to open 'shops' within yards of each other? The money from creating jobs to benefit the economy is dwarfed by the money taken out of it by people spending their salaries on machines programmed to make money. I feel badly let down by the government in this respect. Gambling is everywhere now.
My plan is to attend GA and abstain from all gambling. I'm going to set up standing orders to ensure all my bills get paid and my debts get serviced. This way I can't get the money to waste it. Maybe one day I will get back to a normal life. It's been so long that I forget what a normal life is.

Ho Jrs you've made the most important step in realizing you have a problem and want to fix it. I'm 27 and am in your situation and understand what you mean, no house, living at home, no money to my name. But thats the past you now need to look to the future. Firstly, block access to betting, give money to someone to look after, and family support is key, tell your mum and don't lie anymore. Your family support is crucial, and you can beat gambling, look at the life you can have if you get rid of gambling, its a bright one.

Jrs,

See your GP to discuss your mental state. I used to have panic attacks etc. You need help.

Gambling is one of the greatest causes of social isolation (not saying you are) I've ever known. If you are already prone to depression it'll just encourage and deepen it. You've recognised that gambling is s******g you up.There is a better life out there and with help and determination you can find it. I did.
