The advertising is everywhere

Hi All

I've heard this in many rooms. Programs are sponsored by operators, gambling advertising is 17% of all adverts on TV. Most football teams are sponsored by then. A televised premiership match shows 700 logos or adverts in 90 minutes.

Not teaching anyone to suck eggs but mainstream advertising is to advertise launches, promotions or to gain customers from competitors

I worked in the media industry for 36 years and from what I see, operators are gearing up the younger generation to become gamblers and get compulsive gamblers back into action as that's where there profit lies. Not really to move players from one company to another.

I never noticed the adverts before because I was already doing it but now, yes I do, with their clever colours and psych marketing to attract my brain.

So, in case it helps, this is how I look at it.

When I see an operators advert, branding, sponsorship or logo and I don't place a bet then they have wasted their money trying to attract me and that's a victory for me

Afternoon Stuart, I hope you are well 😊

It was only during my own recovery journey that I then noticed how many televised adverts there are for gambling. I personally think it is awful, promoting something that we know can very quickly lead to an addiction.

Obviously, both of us know now the detrimental damage and widespread impact that gambling can have on someone's life- we have both been there in our own ways.

They use all the bright colours, the characters, the bold lettering, the sounds- trying to make gambling attractive. This should be the opposite, but you are right in the sad fact that this is their way of marketing. There are other addictions individuals can have, but you never see these items, such as alcohol, being advertised. So it does make me question why promoting and encouraging gambling through advertisement is allowed!

Your outlook on it is fantastic. That you find victory, in the companies paying to advertise to gain 'customers', and you are not one of those 'customers'. I hope you feel a sense of pride in having this outlook on gambling and gambling advertisements.

Take care, Stuart!

Keep sharing your outlooks, progress and any challenges, I think it is also a great way of reflecting! You have a very insightful view on life, and a wonderful way of connecting with others.

I hope you're having a good day,

Brooke (Peer Support Worker)

Stuart, I have never  done online gambling before. Even when I watch FB videos all these gambling adverts flood in. I do tend to ignore them but this phenomenon has such a bad influence on people in general. It is sad to see nothing has. been done by the government to restrict this situation.

Hi Ann

I don't know if you saw on the chatroom but I mentioned that on the Gamban app or you can search for it on the web, there is a blog which tells you how to block all gambling adverts on your social media platforms. It was posted on 16th March this year.

I think Gamban are trying to help block everything for us including emails.

I do find it funny that if i try to unsubscribe to a betting email, they tend to hold the opt out on their own sites so Gamban blocks it. I mentioned this to Matt Zarb Cousins so he can maybe poll government to make it part of the operator licences that they have to outsource the unsubscribe

@t2adn4vs7k

Thank you Brooke, I just don't want anyone to end up as far down the road as me.
